About ten years ago, I was in the same position as you.
I knew I was a good player with the potential to regularly shoot in the 70s.
My practice sessions told me that and I knew I had solid fundamentals.
But when I got on the course or played in a competition, I couldn’t get anywhere near to the scores I knew I was capable of. And like you, I immediately put this down to poor technique…
So after trying countless swing lessons, training aids and golf magazine tips without any progress, I needed
And so I embarked on a study and 12 month experiment…
That year took me DEEP into Sports Psychology and Mental Game Coaching.
I interviewed hundreds of players of all levels about their games and found that (on average) most golfers were losing at least 25% of their strokes due to their mental approach to each shot and how they managed and controlled their emotions during a round.
Their under-performance had VERY LITTLE to do with technique!
Considering that the average handicap of 16 has not fallen in the past 30 years, despite MASSIVE advancement in equipment and teaching technology, this may not be surprising to you.
What I found, was that the better the player, the better the mental game.
But this is not something better players are born with… most Tour pros and scratch players are taught these mental game techniques or learn them from experience, but the average player has no clue about them.
I found out what they are.
Once I understood fully how the body and mind work together for good golf, something amazing happened.
Upon finding out how to:
- Concentrate on process instead of outcome
- Turn negative emotions and nerves into a positive
- Visualize and focus on my target
- Develop a feel for shot shapes and distances
- Swing with my subconscious mind
- Use confidence triggers and anchor emotions
- Stay in the present and remain calm
- Accept my bad shots and move on quickly
- Find the positive and build confidence no matter how I played
I dropped 12 shots off my handicap in one golf season (yes, this is true).
I stopped chasing the perfect swing and blaming poor technique for my results and I finally learned what is most important in getting to my best (and I’m still getting better).
The beauty of this way to improve is that it doesn’t require any physical skill – just the application of easy to learn mental skills!
Since making this dramatic discovery over ten years ago, I’ve refined these techniques into an easy to follow “system” and have taught it to over 10.000 golfers world wide. This system is the “Golf State of Mind Training System”.

The Golf State of Mind Putting System
